Ukrainian cycling pro Yaroslav Popovych of the Discovery Team was feeling pretty “frisky” as Phil Ligitt likes to say and managed to breakaway from the peleton in the closing kilometers to win the race by several seconds which in turn put him and the Discovery team in the yellow jersey.
Last years winner was also on hand but not racing, Armstrong was riding shot gun in the Discovery team car to “chat” business with Johann Bruyneel. I am sure that was both nerve racking and a bit inspirational for the Popo.
The race finished up in Rome where two years ago Armstong took two wins in one day (field sprint at the end of a road race and the short time trial). Popovych mentioned that Discovery did not have the winning move planned, rather the cyclist mentioned to several team members just how good he was feeling and said he was going to attack.
Today as I write this the riders are just underway with the all important individual time trial, expect “Popo” to ride one hell of ITT to defend his new found yellow jersey.
