Robbie McEwen Can He Defend His Green Jersey?

Robbie McEwen, lookin good last year as the winner of the coveted green jersey will no doubt have his sights focused on winning the green again this year. What is the green jersey and how does this competition differ from that of the overall yellow jersey? Simply put the green jersey is based on “points” while the yellow jersey is based on overall time. Riders who have incredible sprints after grueling races contend for this jersey. The points awarded to riders are based on the finish of the race, stages that are flat offer higher point values while mountain stages also offer points but the points are slightly diminished in value. Time trails offer even less points, the idea is to offer the most points on the flat stages, and this creates those crazy and often dangerous sprints at the end. This year like every year has riders who will ride not for the overall lead but will instead focus on winning a certain jersey or even just a stage win. Their are a handful of riders who will surely race for the green jersey this year including:

  • Robbie McEwen
  • Tom Boonen
  • Baden Cooke
  • Thor Hushovd
  • Stuart O’Grady
  • I would like to wish all the riders that complete for the green this year luck and safety ~
