For the past several years Patrick McCarty has riden for the powerhouse team Discovery Channel, with so many talented riders on the Discovery team McCarty often did not make the selection for the big races however that is all changing now that Patrick is riding for Team Phonak.
The 24 year old cyclist who also hails from the lone star state is looking forward to his first grand tour since turning pro several years ago. With an incredibly mountainous Giro the Texan has high hopes for the mountain stages and could possibly seam some freedom as the Phonak boys are keeping their game plan fairly loose. McCarty told Velonews “The last week is the hardest. We’re not sure what the team is going to do, so maybe I’ll have a little freedom in one of the stages,”. Another new addition to the Phonak squad is Axel Merckx who is also looking forward to this years Giro with his new teammates and will be looking for stage wins. “Axel and Peña are really looking forward to doing well. Floyd isn’t doing the Giro, so that changes things for the team. I will just go into it and see what happens.”
