Yesterday was a day of mixed emotion for American cycling fans, while many were excited to see Lance win his 67th yellow jersey (only two men in the history of the Tour de France have won the yellow jersey more – Eddie Merckx and Bernard Hinault) nobody wanted to see him “get” the jersey due to an accident or crash. It is hard to see any rider “touch floor” but it is very tough when the man was wearing yellow and leading in such fine fashion for a new comer to the tour.
Yesterday I saw an interview of David Z as he was heading into the hospital to have some ex-rays done and he said he is not sure exactly what happened. Mentioning that the last few kilometres were incredibly painful and that with the team reaching 60k an hour in the final mile he was not aware of what happened.
Team Capitan Riis thought possibly that since David was coming out of a corner at very high speeds his knee might have bumped his handle bars due to the angle of his body in the corner. If this was the case he would have gone flying just as he did, I also heard it might have been caused by his chain popping off or a problem with the chain and rear cog.
Regardless, it was a tough race ending to watch…. hang in David…. your time will come once again!
