The good news for Ullrich is that today he finished the Tour de Romandie which put nearly 700 kilometers of much needed competitive cycling into the Germans legs. The rumour mill has been churning about Jan and his very late start to the season this year and his performance this week in the Tour de Romandie reflexed this. Jan mentioned he felt the power coming back to his legs and while the Giro will be ugly for him it could leave him in great form for the Tour.
Jan has been here before, usually starting his competitive season much later than other pro riders. T-Mobile director Ludwig mentioned “I’ve been involved with cycling a long time, and I know Jan. I simply take the situation as it is. And so far I don’t find it bad,” Ludwig told German newspaper Netzeitung, downplaying the fact that Ullrich has never started his season this late.
Other entrants for the 2006 Giro will include defending Discovery rider Paolo Savoldelli, Italian sprinting sensation Alessandro Petacchi as well as Damiano Cunego and Gilberto Simoni, the Giro gets underway on May 6
