Last year I asked a simple question:
- How do you beat Lance Armstrong?
Lance was a very well rounded rider that excelled in nearly all sports disciplines. He could climb incredibly well and often won mountain top stage finishes, he was also talented in the race against the clock winning nearly all the the time trials over the last seven years. Armstrong was also very tactical waiting for just the right stage or moment to make his move against his rivals and he was backed up by an very strong team.
Now in 2006 Ivan Basso has emerged right on schedule and also seams to bear some of these common traits that Armstrong possessed. During the Giro d’ Italia Basso rode a race that was tactically very similar to how Armstrong won his seven Tour’s, he attacked on the first mountain top stage. Basso won that day claiming the pink jersey that he would wear over the next several weeks to his first Giro victory.
So just how does one plan on beating the unstoppable Basso?
