Over the years I have watched Lance Armstrong win in the mountains often, however in the last couple of Tour’s I think Armstrong rode a slightly different tactical race. Winning on the first summit finish and then riding in defence of his lead and stretching it out when possible was a tactic he used quite often and extremely well.
In the first years of the Armstrong era however Lance seamed to ride with more abandonment, of course he was younger then and probably had a bit more spark in his legs. This video clip from Armstrong’s first tour win in 1999 shows him attacking on the last climb of the day (Sestriere). Their are some great comments by Liggett and Sherwin, one that I like quite a bit came from Paul “I can not remember seeing a yellow jersey ride like that” Paul Sherwin.
