Cycling Accessory

If cycling is just a weekend hobby for you, all you need to perform it is your bike and most likely a helmet. For those that want the best out of this sport however, the ultimate cycling gear and cycling accessories make all the difference in the world. Increasing both performance and safety, cycling accessories include items such as on-boar cycling computers, heart rate monitors, cycling wristwatches, cycling mirrors, lights or locks. In addition, some of them are also meant to increase your comfort while riding, such as water bottles, hydration packs and comfy saddles. Let’s take a short look at each of  these cycling accessory types.

Cycling computers are simply a wonderful addition to your bike. They’re easy enough to install and they can measure your cycling speed at all time. In addition, they measure the distance and time you were riding. Usually cycling computers have 2 timers, one that measures the current time and distance for the current ride, while the other is a global timer that measures a total for all trips. It’s ideal for sprint cyclists or even if you’re not a pro, but simply want to improve yourself with each ride. Most models are very easily installed and detachable, so that you won’t have any trouble, nor will you require any special tools. It’s a good idea to take it off every time you leave your bike out of sight, regardless of the time you’re gone, simply because they’re as easy to steal as they are to install. This is definitely one cycling accessory that will prove vital if you’re riding against a set of parameters such as a time limit, maximum speed or if you simply want to see how much ground you cover up in a given amount of time.

Since, especially for bike hiking and mountain biking, cargo space is usually a problem, there’s a great cycling accessory that can handle this for you: the hydration pack. This is basically a comfortable bag with special cargo slots for holding water and have a built-in reservoir for convenience. Some also feature a small tube that allows you to drink water directly from the reservoir, without having to dismount or to reach for a water bottle. A hydration pack has proven to be an extremely useful cycling accessory, especially on longer, harder runs where water is needed in greater measures than a simple water bottle.

Finally, another great and for some, crucial cycling accessory is the heart rate monitor. Although more common on stationary exercise bikes, a heart rate monitor can be installed on a cycling bike without too much trouble. Knowing your heart rate at all times is obviously important for cyclists that suffer from heart problems, however you can also use this cycling accessory to measure how your body responds to effort and how you can reduce fatigue by undergoing a different riding style.

The faster your heart beat, the faster you’ll get tired. If this happens after the first 10 or so minutes after you started riding, than it might be the time for you to slow down a bit and catch your breath. There are also two types of heart rate monitors: some use straps to measure your heart rate, others can be built in your handle so that the pulse is taken literally through your fingers and (if you’re not wearing a pair of cycling gloves) through your palm. Regardless if you’re suffering from heart conditions or not, a heart rate monitor can prove to be an extremely important cycling accessory for you.
It’s easy to understand why cycling accessories are given so much focus lately, since cycling is constantly improving and at a lighting fast pace even. These are just the tips of technology that give you the chance to improve your riding in any possible way.
