The yellow jersey is the most coveted jersey at the Tour de France, it is worn by the leader with the fastest time each day during the tour, this is of course how the race leader is determined on the last day as the tour finishes in Paris.
With such a historical sporting event their are great legends, records and statistics that accompany the race. This year Lance Armstrong is poised to make his mark again on the sport with the most yellow jersey’s ever worn by a rider of the Tour de France. This record is currently set by cycling ledge Eddy Merckx who was arguably the best bicycle racer to date. What made Merckx so amazing is that he rode dam near all the races through the year and won so often. By examining the “total yellow jersey’s” tally sheet you get a sense of just how dominate he was during his reign.
The Yellow Jersey Was Worn By:
Lance Armstrong: 74 times (currently racing the tour)
Eddy Merckx: 111 times
Bernard Hinault: 79 times
Miguel Indurain: 60 times
Jacques Anquetil: 52 times
Their are several facts that make the above list very interesting, first off Armstrong has won the tour six times. More than anyone else in tour history, this is his record (which he looks like will increase by one this year).
